To give you a little bit of history about Maldives, before the tourism industry began booming, fishing was the main source of income and ran through the veins of every Maldivian. It was an everyday life style which our ancestors took great pride in. Big Game Fishing
There are two paths you can experience when fishing in Maldives for some adrenaline-pumping action providing you thrilling experiences, Big game fishing is the way to go as you come face to face with Maldivian merlin, sail fish, tunas, and other giants of the ocean. Opt traditional techniques such as hand line fishing or go with the more modern techniques such as jigging when catching these giants of the sea. The great thing about fishing is, some of the guest houses in Maafushi will let you have your catch of the day as lunch or dinner.
Sunset Fishing
For a more laid back fishing trip compared to big game fishing, you might enjoy sunset fishing for a delightful yet thrilling evening. You could talk to a water sports and dive center or ask your guesthouse to arrange a fishing trip for you.
Sunset fishing and night fishing usually costs 25 to 30 dollars per person and lasts about 1 to 3 hours. You could opt a speedboat or a traditional dhoni for your fishing trip. We would recommend the latter as you can get a genuine Maldivian fishing experience only in a Maldivian Dhoni.
Big game fishing costs up to $200 per charter with an occupancy of 1 – 6 person with the trips lasting about 3 hours.
Fishing equipment will be provided at these trips but you are always free to bring your own. Light snack and refreshment will be provided to you and you will get to barbecue your catch of the day, allowing you a rewarding ending to your fishing trip at Maafushi.
